AI Can Scale the Hiring Decision. It Can Also Scale the Mistake.
By Brett Dyess
⚠️ AI CAN SCALE THE HIRING DECISION. IT CAN ALSO SCALE THE MISTAKE.
☕ Morning Talent Intelligence
One recruiter can mistakenly reject a qualified candidate.
An algorithm can potentially make the same mistake thousands of times.
That's the part of AI in hiring that deserves more attention.
Stanford researchers recently examined millions of job applications processed through an AI-powered hiring system.
Their research found evidence that bias wasn't simply disappearing because software was involved.
In some cases, technology could actually make the consequences more systematic.
💡 Talent Insight
Automation changes the scale of a hiring decision.
If a recruiter makes a poor judgment, it may affect one candidate.
If an automated screening rule makes a poor judgment, it can affect an entire candidate population.
And if multiple employers rely on similar systems?
The consequences can follow candidates across the labor market.
That's a very different kind of recruiting risk.
💭 Question
As companies automate more of the hiring process, are we putting as much effort into auditing the decisions as we are into accelerating them?
⚒️ Brett's Perspective
I'm bullish on AI in recruiting.
It can help recruiters search larger talent pools, identify patterns, reduce administrative work and spend more time advising the business.
But automation doesn't eliminate the need for judgment.
It increases the importance of it.
The question shouldn't simply be:
"Can AI make this decision?"
It should also be:
"How do we know it's making the right decision?"
That means understanding:
- 🔎 What signals the system is using
- 📊 Who advances — and who doesn't
- 🧪 Whether outcomes are being tested
- 👤 Where human review still matters
- 🔄 How mistakes are corrected
The goal shouldn't be removing humans from hiring.
It should be combining technology with better human judgment.
Because AI can scale good decisions.
But it can scale bad ones too.
And at hiring scale, small errors don't always stay small.
